How to Ask Allah for Help: A Simple Guide to Making Dua

It is simple, speak to Allah directly. Tell Him what is troubling you and ask for what you need. You can make “dua” in your own words and in your own language. You do not need to know Arabic to ask Allah for help.

Muslims call this personal prayer “dua”. You can ask for guidance, forgiveness, healing, or help with a difficulty. Your need may be very small, or maybe beyond anyone's ability to help. You do not need an appointment or a perfect speech. Allah already knows what you are going through and what you need, and He wants you to just ask.

How Do I Call Upon Allah?

Allah is the one Creator. He created you, and He hears you. Speak to Him directly. You do not need a prophet, saint, or any other person to carry your prayer to Him. If you wonder whether Allah hears your call, He has already answered:

وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِى عَنِّى فَإِنِّى قَرِيبٌ ۖ أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ ٱلدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ ۖ فَلْيَسْتَجِيبُوا۟ لِى وَلْيُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِى لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْشُدُونَ ۝١٨٦

When My servants ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about Me: I am truly near. I respond to one’s prayer when they call upon Me. So let them respond ˹with obedience˺ to Me and believe in Me, perhaps they will be guided ˹to the Right Way˺.

Surah Al-Baqarah, Qur'an 2:186.

English translation: Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran. All Qur'anic quotations below use this translation.

Allah is near. He hears your call, and He calls you to believe in Him and obey Him. Ask with hope and trust, remembering that you are speaking to your Lord.

How to Make Dua When You Have a Problem

Keep it simple. For a personal dua outside the formal daily prayer, you can begin like this:

  1. Find a quiet moment and place where you can pay attention. If your need is urgent, call upon Allah where you are.
  2. Turn your heart to Allah. Remember that He hears you and knows what you cannot explain.
  3. Praise Allah, then ask Him for the help you need. Call upon Him by His beautiful names, such as the Most Merciful or the most Generous.
  4. Be honest about your fears and mistakes. Ask for forgiveness if you have done wrong.
  5. Remember that any help you receive comes by Allah's permission only.
  6. Finish with hope in Allah's mercy, and continue doing what is right and possible in your situation.

You can make personal dua in any language you understand. You may speak quietly and raise your hands, as Muslims often do when making personal supplication. These steps can help you get started.

During the formal prayer, you can also make dua in "sujud", when your forehead touches the ground. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged supplication in this position in Sahih Muslim 482. The formal prayer has its own rules about wording and language, which you can learn with a knowledgeable teacher.

You can write down personal duas, and return to them when needed. Choose words you understand, and pay attention to what you are asking Allah for.

What If I Feel Overwhelmed and Cannot Find the Words?

Then keep it short. For example you could say : “O Allah, I feel lost. Please guide me. Help me handle what is in front of me. Forgive my mistakes and give me the strength to do what is right.”

Change the words to fit your need. Someone caring for a sick parent may ask for healing and patience. Someone who has hurt a friend may ask for the courage to apologize.

If you cannot manage a long dua, ask for one good thing. You can call upon Allah again later. He hears and responds to requests big or small.

Two Duas From the Qur'an You Can Learn

The Qur'an contains prayers you can learn and use. One asks for good in this life and the next:

وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَقُولُ رَبَّنَآ ءَاتِنَا فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةًۭ وَفِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ حَسَنَةًۭ وَقِنَا عَذَابَ ٱلنَّارِ ۝٢٠١

Yet there are others who say, “Our Lord! Grant us the good of this world and the Hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the Fire.”

Surah Al-Baqarah, Qur'an 2:201.

The Qur'an also tells us how Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him) called upon Allah in deep distress. Part of his prayer was:

أَن لَّآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبْحَـٰنَكَ إِنِّى كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

“There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except You. Glory be to You! I have certainly done wrong.”

Excerpt from Surah Al-Anbiya, Qur'an 21:87.

This prayer affirms Allah's oneness and admits one's own wrongdoing. You can learn these words over time. Until then, ask Allah for help in the language you already speak.

Can I Ask Allah for Immediate Help?

Yes. Ask Allah for help as soon as you need it. Ask Him to protect you and guide you to the right action.

No one can promise that your problem will end as soon as you finish praying. Allah knows what is best for us, even when we do not understand why a hardship continues.

This trust is called “tawakkul”: relying on Allah while using the help He makes available. You can make “dua” and seek help from other people at the same time.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to seek what benefits us and ask Allah for help in Sahih Muslim 2664.

If someone robs you, get to safety and call the police as soon as it is safe. Keep asking Allah for protection while you seek help.

How Do I Balance Dua With Taking Action?

Suppose you have lost your keys. Ask Allah to help you find them, then look where you last used them. Try yesterday's coat pockets too. They have a habit of keeping things to themselves.

Make “dua” as you search. You are relying on Allah while using the mind He gave you. If you get stuck, ask someone to help you look. Their help also comes by Allah's permission.

For a harder problem, choose one useful and honest thing you can do today. Ask Allah to help you do it well. You can begin without knowing how everything will turn out.

What If I Keep Making Dua and Nothing Changes?

It can hurt to ask for something again and again while the problem remains. The Qur'an teaches that Allah responds to prayer, but it gives us no timetable for receiving every result we want. If you need guidance, study what Allah has revealed and seek sound advice. You do not need to wait for an audible reply.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned against giving up on dua out of impatience. In Sahih Muslim 2735c, he also taught that a person should not ask for sinful things or for family ties to be broken.

Keep asking for what is good, and be willing to change a harmful course. Accept advice, care, and support when you need them. Help from another person may be among the means Allah makes available to you.

You can begin today with a simple request: “O Allah, guide me and help me do what is right.” Then take the next step you can. If you are learning about Islam and want to understand its testimony of faith, SayTheShahada.com explains how to begin.
