How Do We Know Prophet Muhammad ﷺ Was a True Prophet?
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is Allah's true and final Messenger, sent to all mankind to call us to worship Allah alone. The Quran is Allah's speech and the greatest proof of his prophethood. Allah also supported him with miracles that his companions witnessed.
Revelation is guidance Allah gives His prophets. Sahih al-Bukhari 3 describes the angel Gabriel bringing revelation to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the cave of Hira. He returned frightened to his wife Khadijah. Her cousin Waraqah recognised the angel as the one Allah had sent to Moses. Allah chose His Messenger and gave him the message he would teach.
1. He called people to worship one God
His central message was worship of Allah alone. He called people away from idols and taught them to pray to their Creator directly. This is “tawhid”: worshipping Allah without giving any share of worship to another being. Quran 16:36 establishes that previous prophets and messengers brought this same core message. He continued their call to the one true God.
2. His good character was known to an opponent
Abu Sufyan was still an opponent when Heraclius questioned him about Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Asked whether his people had accused him of lying before his claim to prophethood, he answered no. Sahih al-Bukhari 7 records this exchange. This evidence about his character comes through someone who opposed him at the time.

3. He could not read or write
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ could not read or write. Quran 29:48 reminds his listeners that he had not read earlier books or written them with his hand. This rules out the claim that he gathered its teaching by reading earlier scriptures himself. Allah revealed this book to a Messenger who had not learnt it through reading. Its source was the Creator who sent him.
4. The Quran is his enduring miracle
The Quran gives guidance about our Creator and how to live. Its Arabic wording is beyond human imitation, and its teaching remains consistent. Its true reports about future events provide further proof. Allah challenges those who accuse His Messenger of inventing it to produce a chapter like it (Quran 10:38). He calls us to examine the book:
أَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَۚ وَلَوۡ كَانَ مِنۡ عِندِ غَيۡرِ ٱللَّهِ لَوَجَدُواْ فِيهِ ٱخۡتِلَٰفٗا كَثِيرٗا ٨٢
Do they not then reflect on the Quran? Had it been from anyone other than Allah, they would have certainly found in it many inconsistencies.
An-Nisa 4:82

These qualities belong together. Ibn Baz explains that the Quran's unmatched language accompanies its great teachings and true reports of matters hidden from human knowledge. The proof reaches beyond a person's taste in beautiful writing. A translation helps you understand the message; studying Arabic allows closer examination of its wording.
For example, Quran 30:2–4 foretold that the Romans, after defeat, would win within a few years. They then defeated the Persians. Ibn Baz explains this fulfilled prediction as a sign that Allah sent His Messenger. Allah disclosed future events to him, and what He revealed came true.
5. He delivered revelation that corrected him
In Quran 80:1–10, Allah corrects Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for turning his attention away from a blind man seeking guidance while attending to others. He conveyed that correction openly to his followers. This shows his faithful delivery of what Allah revealed, including a passage that corrected his own conduct. Allah's guidance governed his teaching.
6. He rejected a false claim that favoured him
When his son Ibrahim died, a solar eclipse occurred. Some people linked the eclipse to the child's death. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ corrected them: eclipses do not happen because someone dies or is born. He directed people to pray and call upon Allah. Sahih al-Bukhari 1043 preserves his response. Even during grief, he rejected a false story that favoured his family.
7. His life challenges the charge of personal gain
He became a leader, yet his way of life remained modest. Aishah reported that when he died, his armour was pledged to a Jewish man for barley (Sahih al-Bukhari 2916). He had given his armour as security for food. This concrete detail challenges the claim that he invented religion to enrich himself. His leadership did not become a life of luxury.

8. His words about a future peace came true
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ spoke of Allah bringing peace through his grandson Hasan between two large Muslim groups. Hasan later reached a peace agreement with Muawiyah. Sahih al-Bukhari 2704 records both the earlier statement and the agreement. Allah brought about peace through the person His Messenger had named. This fulfilled prophecy is a specific example of events unfolding as he had described.
9. Allah supported him with witnessed miracles
Allah split the moon as a sign for His Messenger. Abdullah ibn Masud described the event (Sahih al-Bukhari 3636). Allah also caused water to flow between the Prophet's fingers, supplying a thirsty gathering of 1,500 people. Jabir described what happened in Sahih al-Bukhari 3576. These were miracles witnessed by his companions and preserved in authentic reports.
The reports name the people who passed each account from one person to the next. This lets scholars examine how the reports reached us. The authentic Sunnah preserves these signs as evidence that Allah supported His Messenger.
10. He is the final Messenger to all mankind
His mission reaches all peoples (Quran 7:158). Allah identifies him as the final prophet in Quran 33:40. He compared his place among the prophets to the final brick completing a building (Sahih al-Bukhari 3535). His truthful teaching establishes that no new prophet will come after him. Every claim to new prophethood after him is false. Allah sent him as mercy for the world (Quran 21:107).
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ truly is Allah's Messenger
The evidence establishes that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is a true prophet. The Quran and the miracles Allah gave him answer the suggestion that he was merely sincere and mistaken. A private mistake cannot account for those public signs. Allah sent him with Islam, the true religion. His reports are to be believed and his guidance followed. Our guide to recognising a true prophet explains the wider question.
Read the sources and ask Allah for guidance. Allah guides hearts; our role is to explain His message and help you understand it. If you accept that Allah alone deserves worship and Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger, you can learn the “shahada”, Islam's declaration of faith.
