Does God Exist? A Rational Investigation Into the Existence of a Creator

Before asking which religion is true, there is a more basic question:

Does God exist?

It is worth asking seriously, because the answer changes everything. If there is no Creator, then we are ultimately left with a universe that simply exists without a Creator or purpose beyond itself. But if there is a Creator, then we should want to know who He is and why He created us.

Why Does Anything Exist?

You exist. The world exists. The stars exist. But none of us caused our own existence.

So where did everything come from?

The Qur'an presents this question in a remarkably direct way:

"Or were they created by nothing, or are they their own creators?"

```
Qur'an 52:35
```

Think about those two possibilities.

Could you create yourself?

No. You would have to exist before you could create yourself.

Could you be created by absolute nothingness?

Then there would be nothing there to create you.

The Qur'an immediately follows the question by asking:

"Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Rather, they are not certain."

```
Qur'an 52:36
```

The point is simple: we did not create ourselves, nor did we create the heavens and the earth. So our existence points beyond ourselves.

What Does Islam Say About the Creator?

Islam teaches that everything besides Allah is created and dependent upon Him, while Allah is not dependent upon anything.

Allah says:

"O humanity! It is you who are in need of Allah, but Allah is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy."

```
Qur'an 35:15
```

And He says:

"Allah—the Sustainer needed by all."

```
Qur'an 112:2
```

This is not a minor detail. If there is a Creator, He cannot simply be another part of creation. He is the One upon whom creation depends.

Can We Know Anything About Him?

Islam does not ask us to invent an image of God from our imagination.

Allah tells us:

"There is nothing like Him, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Seeing."

```
Qur'an 42:11
```

And He says:

"Say, 'He is Allah—One and Indivisible. Allah—the Sustainer needed by all. He has never had offspring, nor was He born. And there is none comparable to Him.'"

```
Qur'an 112:1–4
```

The Creator is one. He is not created, He is not dependent upon creation, and nothing is comparable to Him.

This is the foundation of tawhid: worshipping Allah alone.

What About Human Nature?

The Qur'an also tells us that human beings have been created upon a natural disposition toward the truth.

"So direct your face toward the religion, inclining to truth—the natural disposition Allah has instilled in mankind."

```
Qur'an 30:30
```

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

"Every child is born upon the fitrah."

```
Sahih Muslim 2658
```

The fitrah does not mean that everyone automatically knows every detail of Islam. We still need revelation and guidance. But it tells us something important: belief in our Creator is not presented in Islam as something completely alien to human nature.

But Is This Enough?

We should be honest. Establishing that there is a Creator does not, by itself, tell us which religion is true.

There is still a much bigger question:

If God exists, has He communicated with humanity?

If He created us intentionally, would He leave us without guidance about why we are here, how we should live, and what happens after death?

The Qur'an tells us that our existence is not without purpose:

"Did you then think that We had created you without purpose and that you would never be returned to Us?"

```
Qur'an 23:115
```

That takes us to the next question.

The Next Step

If there is a Creator, then knowing that Creator is more important than anything else we can investigate.

So don't stop with the question, "Does God exist?"

Ask the next one:

If God exists, what is He like?

That is where our investigation continues.

And if you are genuinely seeking the truth, keep following the evidence. If your investigation eventually leads you to Islam and you want to understand the Shahada and what it means to testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger, you can continue your investigation at SayTheShahada.com.

Seek the truth. Follow the evidence.
